Blue Star Webbing

Background & Challenge:

Blue Star Webbing decided to automate their warehouse. To do so, they sought to purchase warehouse management software from their current software vendor. However, Harry Eckstein, Blue Star Webbing's General Manager, became hesitant when the software vendor insisted that Blue Star change their current business processes to adapt to the new software. Not wanting to change his business practices, Harry turned to SMC Data and asked for assistance.

Solution:

SMC Data designed & developed a custom Warehouse Management and Logistics Software System to accommodate Blue Star Webbing's unique business requirements. In addition, we integrated the new system with existing manufacturing and distribution software already in place at Blue Star.

As part of the upgrade, we built in the ability to track inventory by lot and warehouse location using hand-held devices. The hand-held devices track inventory during receipts, moves, shipments & physical inventory. Also, lots do not need to be allocated to individual order lines. This is done automatically by the system as goods are shipped.

SMC Data also integrated the new Warehouse Management and Logistics Software System with the UPS Worldwide Tracking System. This allows Blue Star Webbing's customer service team to cross-reference UPS tracking numbers and shipment charges directly from order screens on the AS/400.

Results:

  1. As a result of improved warehouse automation, inventory is kept at an optimum level.
  2. Order fulfillment has been sped up by the ability to ship from the warehouse docking station directly to customers, upon receipt of inventory.
  3. Customer service has improved due to the detailed shipment information made available through our integration with UPS tracking.
